Read the carat figure as a pair, then check each stone

Earring listings often show total carat weight: the combined weight of all diamonds in the pair. A pair of solitaire studs described as 1.00 carat total weight would typically contain two diamonds of approximately 0.50 carat each. Confirm this rather than assuming each earring contains a one-carat stone.

Halo designs require an extra check. Their advertised total may include both centre diamonds and the surrounding smaller stones, so two pairs with equal total weights can have very different centre-stone sizes.
